Product Overview

AKG K 240 Semi-Open Studio Headphones, a leading brand in headphones used by studios and in-home enthusiast looking for quality and durability.

Designed for comfort and long time wear, AKG K 240 Semi-Open Studio Headphones deliver a cool, comfortable padding that eliminates sweat and ensures consecutive hour usage which is a necessity in the studio business. The Semi-Open design allows audio to be heard clearly without interruption while enabling you to hear others in your immediate vicinity.

55 ohms impedance, plug-in cable, 3 meters in length is included as well and the mini XLR connectors that create a secure fit so the attachment won’t suddenly fail. Signal transmission is clear and uninterrupted. Frequency levels range from 15 Hz – 25kHz to reach an excellent deep bass sound quality while also allowing you to experience the clear highs and lows.

The Good & The Bad

The Pros:

  • Excellent sound quality – for the price the AKG K 240 headphones offer as good as or better than a lot of the other pricier headphones on the market today. Not only can will you experience clear highs and mids, the bass is out of the world. Others will not be able to hear your audio unless you max out the volume, but you will be able to hear others clearly that are next to you.
  • Comfortable design – Although these headphones surround your head, they are vented so sweating is eliminated allowing for longer wear. The padding and adjustments allow for the perfect seal and fit. A contributing factor in the comfort of the AKG K 240 Semi-Open Headphones is the lightweight design.
  • Durability – These headphones are built to last for years with proper care. Not only are these headphones durable but they are sleek and sexy looking, appealing to the eye.
  • Connector and Cable – Detachable cable is included and it allows flexibility with the length. The cable is also made with a 99.9% copper-free material and the gold-plated audio jacks maintain a good connection without slipping or breaking free, allowing for uninterrupted use.
  • Cost – Compared to other headphones on the market, these are reasonably priced and offer a lot of bang for the buck, which includes quality.

The Cons:

  • Some sound leakage – Although the semi design can contain most of the audio without leakage, it’s not 100% leak free, especially if you turn the volume up to the max. If you are listening at regular levels you should be fine.
  • Ear cup fit – Some complain about the ear cup fit, they say it’s overwhelming and not as adjustable as they would like. The snug fit is designed for sound isolation and intended that way but some do not appreciate that quality.

Who Are These Headphones Designed For?

The AKG K 240 Semi-Open Headphones are for use in studios as a professional piece of equipment. Those enveloped in the world of movie producing, music studios, and some home enthusiast dabbling in the realm of recording or video productions. They are not particularly designed for the amateur or children, and are not designed for use during travel such as regular ear phones.

Our Final Opinion on the AKG K 240 Semi-Open Headphones

After weighing the pros and cons of the AKG K 240 headphones, I have come to the conclusion that there really isn’t a perfect pair of headphones that everyone will agree 100% on. However, if you consider all that you are getting for the price, they would be something worth trying out. You are not losing out on much money.

More expensive elaborate headphones are available but if you can get everything you are looking for then why go those routes, especially if you are new in the business just starting out.

This company is very reputable and experienced. They have been in the industry of creating headphones for years, and maintaining numerous positive reviews on their products.

  1. what an excellent review on the AKG K 240 Semi-Open Studio Headphones. i am trying to get one for my self and its a good thing i felt on this review first. to me, while some might see it that way, i do not think the ear cup fit is a disadvantage. thanks a lot i am going for it.

    • Great to hear Cedric!
Don’t forget to come back here and leave your personal opinion on the product 🙂

  2. Great review, I was wondering how well these semi-open headphones would do for sound leakage but you’ve answered that question 100%. Thanks.

Would these work well for music production (mixing tracks)? I’ve only done a little bit of research so far, but I’ve seen that in this application you generally want a ‘flatter’ response speaker/headphone so that you can get a true representation of what you’re trying to mix.Do you have any advice?

    • Hi Jolie,
I’ve actually used them myself in a few audio recordings and they’ve been excellent. I would however, always advise mixing and mastering through speakers instead of headphones. Use headphones as a guide – not for the finished article 🙂

  3. Hey Chris,

It’s amazing to think that technology has come this far, I use the headphones that come with the iPhone and I thought they were fantastic for having the volume control by your neck so you can change it without having to use your cellphone or iPod, haha these headphones are next level.

  4. Hi Chris,

Great review on the AKG K 240 studio headphones. I absolutely agree with you that there is no single pair of headphones that could satisfy a studio developer.

Nonetheless there is always one feature that people look for. To me, sound isolation is important as it brings us to a whole new realm when listening to music. It just takes us to that place where we can hear the highs, mids and bass more clearly than without isolation.

  5. Thanks for reviewing these headphones. I don’t know much about AKG K 240 so it was good to read about the quality and the potential. Being a music person and listening regularly to a cappella singing, I need good quality headphones and I may just run to a pair of these if they really are as good as you say. The sweat reduction is interesting, never really thought that to be an issue before but I guess it can be for some.

    • Hi Neil,
Yeah the sweat reduction function is geared towards those hot studio environments – can be a real pain 🙂

  6. Who doesn’t love the Blair Witch Project?! Thanks for the Top 10 page it brought back memories of movies I enjoyed in the past. Your site is informative and I’m glad it exists. It is somewhere I can find horror films other than the regular filmed horror flicks. It gives you ideas of great Found Footage films to watch.

  7. Hello Chris,

I am looking for headphones that will block out noise and let me listen to what it is I am trying to hear. I listen to videos and MP3 books when I am on planes and these headphones, sound like something I might be interested in for that but you stated they are not for amatuers.
Do you have any recommendations for sound reduction headphones for the useage I have described?

    The Fat Guy

    • Oh these headphones would be perfect for that but it’s all down to how much you want to spend at the end of the day. The cheaper options will not be as effective as the more expensive ones – there will be sound leaks!
As I say, it’s all down to the budget you are looking to play with 🙂

  8. Hi Chris I was going to get these headphones so this review has come in very handy. I was really worried about the sound quality would let me down and through your article you confirmed my fears that I can actually buy this product. The only thing I’m worried about is sound leakage as I travel on the tube a lot.

    • As the review states Nigel, there is minor leakage but they are AKG at the end of the day – this means a top of the range audio product 🙂

  9. Your AKG K 240 Review seems really good compared to other reviews I have read on headsets. I find one of the biggest problems with finding a good set is the fit around the ears which will and can be a challenge for any body. As good as the construction for sound and over all style go the fit is sometimes the hardest to get around.
    Great review.

  10. Hi Chris,

I love the comfort padding that eliminates sweat because it has always been my problem when using head phones.

The semi open design is perfect for me because I don’t really want to be cut off from the world while listening to my favorite music. I always want to maintain even just a small degree of contact enough to be aware of my surroundings.

    • Thanks rule2020 and Travis – glad you both like the look of the cans we are reviewing 🙂

  11. Hi, Chris. The AKG K 240 headphones sound like a great product. You have really given some great points about them and I appreciate that. I have been looking for a pair for my husband but haven’t decided yet. You have given me some important points to consider. Maybe you can give me some advice on a pair for our home use. Please let me know! Thanks!

    • Hi Peggy,
Well the AKG’s will certainly work in the home environment but they are probably a little too ‘professional’ for that! A decent, everyday, home pair of headphones can be picked up for about $35 these days ( Sony have a consumer line! ).

  12. Hey Chris.
Not going to lie, the price is where it’s at, not bad for some decent seeming headphones. Are these the kind you use in the studio? I feel like if the ear cup wasn’t perfect, I’d be a little irritated with using them for the long periods of time I usually do. But either way, they seem dope, know anywhere I can try a demo? Maybe Best buy?

    Matt TheDopestMatrix

    • Hi Matt, they are suited to all types of audio situations really but I use them mainly in a studio environment or for editing video ( After Effects & Sony Vegas ).

  13. Great review. I appreciate your comment at the end that these are best for those in the recording industry.
Since I am not in that industry, which headphones do you think are the best for the home enthusiast? What do you think of Bose and Sennheiser? Do you think home audiophiles need gold componentry in the connectors?
    Regards,
    Duncan

    • Hi FunkyDunc ( great name by the way! ),
These days I would advise home consumers to go for Sennheiser products – reasonably priced and great quality ( in most cases! )

  14. I read your article about studio headphones. This is quite interesting. I used to purchase the noise cancelling headphone before. Although noise cancelling headphones is good, I gained additional knowledge about studio headphones. This is really interesting and I feel good after reading your article. I didn’t know that there are seperate websites for US Customers and UK Customers.

    • Hi Shivaram,
Yes there are many different Amazon stores depending on your personal demographic 🙂

  15. Hello! This is a very good review about headphones. I didn’t know this brand. There is such a hype around Dr Dre Beats here in France where I live that I don’t even know that other headphones could exist 🙂 Anyway, you said that they are not perfect. If you were to choose the perfect headphones, which brand would you choose? thanks.

    • Well I’d probably stick with AKG or maybe Sennheiser Angelce – they’ve both worked well for me in the past 🙂

  16. Love these. Been using them for 5 years. Use for general music listening, editing, and movies on laptop.

    • Hi Brandon,

Yeah I use them for monitoring with Ableton Live and Logic Pro – great response on them for editing audio! 🙂

  17. I was looking for headphones to do some mixing, as I am an amateur singer/songwriter. Do you think that these headphones would suit me? I’m a little worried about what you said with the ear cup fit. I need very comfortable headphones because I can mix during long hours (or long nights!). Did you use them for a long period of time to test their comfort?

    • I actually use these in line with Ableton Live 9 – they are perfect for mixing down! 🙂

  18. Hey I really like the concept of your website and it is really easy on the eyes. It’s also very navigable and you can easily jump from article to article.

I was thinking I needed a new pair of headphones. These seem like a really nice buy and not too expensive. Ill have to consider them if i decide to buy a pair,

I really appreciate the information and hope to hear a response from you

  19. Excellent review on the AKG K 240, I am a musician and producer as well and I am actually keeping an eye out for some really good headphones that are not the highly esteemed dre beats. I have been reviewing some shure headphones, but you actually got me pondering if I will be making a smart decision, thank’s for the review. Beautiful website btw!

    • Well thanks for saying so Yehoshua ( hope I just spelled that correctly! ). Good luck with the producing side of things! 🙂

  20. I really like the concept of your website and the design. Everything is easy to read and you can go from article to article.

Those look really nice headphones. You see headphones that go for more than 300 dollars so the price of under 90 isn’t bad at all.

Have you sued them in a studio yet?

Thanks for the interesting article and i’ll keep these in mind if I ever need a pair.

    • Hi Dylan,

Yes I’ve used them in many different audio engineering situations – they are well up to the job every time!

  21. Great review Chris. I found your layout to be extremely effective. It was simple and I did not feel I had content overload. The media you chose fit very well and your paragraphs were short and had sufficient information to help people who are interested in the akg-k 240 headphones.

  22. Great review Chris. I found your layout to be extremely effective. It was simple and I did not feel I had content overload. The media you chose fit very well and your paragraphs were short and had sufficient information to help people who are interested in the akg-k 240 headphones.

  23. After reading your review i find this AKG K 240 headphone looks really cool. It best suits all me needs. The headset which i own has lost its capability to produce good sound so its time to change to a good headphone which is capable of providing good sound quality for long time and this one seems to be the one which I am looking for.
