Product Overview

By paying detailed attention to the quality of the camera itself and the videos it shoots, the Canon VIXIA HF R600 (White) offers reliability and perfection when it comes to videography. No matter what the purposes of shooting a video are, you can be assured that this will give you clear images.

The Canon VIXIA HF R600 is easy to use with great zoom capabilities and image stabilization capabilities to make the images as clear as possible. The SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer will make the image steady hence achieving a clear image while the 57x Advanced zoom range will allow you to capture even the furthest objects in detail.

A continually variable zoom speed allows flawless shooting with the telephoto power going all the way to 1853mm from 32.5mm. The image stabilization technology applied works on all sorts of shakes expected during video shooting ranging from rotational to vertical and horizontal movements.

As for the images, the 3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image sensor will give you nothing short of the best. With a high resolution of 1920X1080 it will give clear videos with life-like HD features. No matter what challenges you may be facing while shooting, the natural color will be maintained.

The camera offers two shooting modes; MP4 and AVCHD with bit rates of 28mbps and 35mbps respectively which are among the highest a camcorder can offer. With a 1080/60p recording, a lot of information is captured and with 60frames per second image capturing rate, moving objects exhibit crisp movement.

Canon VIXIA HF R600

To process the images captured, the Canon VIXIA HF R600 (White) is fitted with the DIGICDV 4 Image Processor. This generates quality images regardless of whether shot in the dark or in broad daylight while controlling external noise. The better news is that the quality of the images is as good as the original no matter how big a screen you use to watch it.

The 3.0 inch touch LCD control allows for easy control and the pre-set modes make videography easy even for the amateurs. While the audio scene select allows one to get perfect sound no matter whether it is outdoors or indoors, the smart AUTO and the intelligence IS make shooting perfect regardless of the conditions under which it is done.

As for sharing your videos with the world, the removable SD card allows you to do so with ease. With different SD card capacities to choose from, you can opt for the one most convenient for you. Once you are done recording, simply remove the card from its slot and transfer it to your computer and copy your videos.

The high capacity BP-718 lithium-ion battery pack is rechargeable and lasts for long. The intelligent technology that it comes with indicates the remaining battery life accurately so you are not left stranded when it dies off but rather get a fair warning in advance.

The Good & The Bad

The Pros

  • 5 audio modes to choose from depending on the shooting situation allow for excellent sound quality.
  • Intelligent IS allows for clear and sharp images even when the camera is shaken during shooting.
  • Excellent motion images capturing capabilities
  • Cinema-look filters allow creation of cinematic effects that are not only fun but give quality videos too.
  • Face detection capabilities
  • Affordable

The Cons

  • No video light for low light video shooting
  • Touch screen control does not support the REC button (the manual one on the side is the only option)

Who is This Camera For?

Anyone who values their videography experience should get this. The price is pocket-friendly and the features quite great. Whether you need a camera for taking animal videos, family videos or events like birthdays or weddings, this is a great choice.

Whether you are buying your first camera or you are an experienced videographer, this will prove to be a worthwhile investment. It will give you clear images no matter the conditions under which the shooting is done.

As for parents, the Baby Mode will allow you to follow the development of your children and keep all those precious moments in as life-like state as possible. The standby pre-roll mode allows you to capture even the moments you may have missed. It pre-records three seconds before you even press the record button so you capture the whole action as the baby does it.

Our Final Opinion on The Canon VIXIA HF R600

The Canon VIXIA HF R600 offers great features without the need to break the bank to afford it. With excellent image stabilization and zooming capabilities, one is able to capture every moment with detail and in real time. The processing is done perfectly to give well-focused videos while the storage is convenient allowing ease in sharing videos. The long battery life ensures reliability while the LCD touch interface allows easy control. This is definitely worth purchasing.

  1. I have never owned or used a camcorder, but I have always had an interest in making videos of special moments, or to help my followers understand my point. You have now sparked my interest in this particular camcorder. The great part about it is, it’s a canon!

When you speak of images, are you speaking about video or actual still images?

Also, does this camcorder have the ability to shoot single images, rather than just video?

    Chris

    • I only ever used the camera for video shoots but I do believe that it has a function for single shot processing.

  2. I love the review on the Canon VIXIA HF R600. I have been looking for a camera that I could multitask with. I would love to have a camera that has many features that would work well with all kinds of situation. Can you tell me if this would be a good camera for making tutorials for Youtube or maybe posting video shots on websites for instructional purposes?

    • Hi Kitty,
I can safely say that this camera is blinding in any ‘video shot’ situation – no matter what you use it for 🙂
      Hope this helps!

  3. I rarely feel I need anything more than a photo for video footage but I do miss not having something during birthdays, christmas, parties etc. This is very reasonably priced and as a 9/10 I assume you’d recommend it?? I love all your social media links.. you have accounts everywhere!! Sammi

    • Oh Yeah I’d definitely recommend it Sammi – a tight bit of equipment 🙂

  4. I’ve been using my Canon DSLR camera for videos. While it does a very nice job, it is a lot heavier than the camera that you have just reviewed. It also doesn’t have the zoom capabilities of a standalone camcorder. I’m curious, how much space does it take to record in 1080/60p? My current camera uses about 8-10 GB/hr of video.

    • Off the top of my head I couldn’t really tell you Kevin but 10 GB of memory sounds like an awfully high amount to use for one shoot in 1080!
I’d have to say that this model is probably a lot more handy with the memory than that 🙂

  5. This is an awesome camera review,

I can’t believe all the features it has!

I have kids and I usually just whip out my iPhone to take videos and pics of them doing things to send to friends and family but I might have to get myself one of these and get far better quality images/video.

  6. Hi. Thank you for the very thorough review of the Canon VIXIA HF R600. It helps to know exactly what one is purchasing. My cousin is expecting a baby and I am definitely giving her your website link so she can order herself one to capture all those cute new baby moments….the crying, the screaming, etc.lol. just kidding. All the happy moments too.

    • Great stuff Selvie – good luck with the new addition to the family 🙂

  7. I have never been very familiar with cannon products (I’m a nixon guy) but I would defiantly consider purchasing this product after this review. How would you say the video capabilities compare to the nixon D5300? That’s my DSLR of choice but very rarely use the video function since I don’t do vlog’s.

    • The video capabilities are excellent on this camera Thorpe, to be honest with you, they are on most cameras these days ( including the cameras you find on most phones!!! )

  8. Keeping record of memorable events is a great thing. I used to own a camera for this purpose but not a canon. That camera was stolen. With this your review on the canon VIXIA HF R600 with its many functionalities, I am being tempted to buy the canon VIXIA.
Thanks for the post. It is nice and informational.

  9. Oooooohh!! It’s been a long time since I’ve owned a video camera. I tend to use my iphone for everything these days – I even prefer it to my digital cameras. But sometimes I wish I had something more task-specific for taking videos. Like for example, as you said in your review, it has Intelligent IS in case your hands are shaky. The iphone is definitely a good all rounder, but not really ideal at videoing. One question… what would be the compatible PC editing software…?

    • Well I would always have to recommend Sony Vegas or After Effects for video editing – I don’t go anywhere without them ( my laptop is my suitcase LOL )

  10. HI!
This review was just what i was looking for!
The wife and I have been thinking about getting our first real camera and this one sounds like it will do the job quite well.
Your review has convinced us to give it a try.
Do you know what kind of case this camera comes with?

  11. Hi Chris,

I think I love the Canon VIXIA HF R600 camcorder. It is very sleek, compact and lightweight. Perfect for my summer expeditions. Affordable too.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I just I have one question:

Do you think I can use a tripod with it? My old Sony camcorder ,though pretty much the same size with this one, didn’t have a tripod lock below, so couldn’t use it for steady shots.

    • Hi George,
The model I used had a tripod lock on it’s underside so I would think they all have the same function 🙂

  12. Great review!
It never ceases to amaze me the kind of quality these little cameras can produce. They seem to get smaller and smaller all the time, yet some of them put out broadcast quality video! I wonder why news shooters still use those big heavy cameras?

Do you know how long the battery will last under normal conditions? cheers

    • Hi Micheal,
I cannot remember the exact specs on the battery life but it will all boil down to what parameters you are using on the camera – some will be bigger energy drains than others! The battery life is usually very good on these sort of products so there’s nothing to worry about there 🙂

  13. Great review. I’m another ‘whip out my iPhone’ kind of guy, but I never have enough capacity to get everything I want when I want it. I have a little boy and sometimes create slide-show videos with music. They look okay, but I think it’s almost time to invest in a video camera. I’m getting a bit restless with the slides.

Thanks for the info. I like the fact that there aren’t many cons there – and it’s pretty affordable. Definitely on my list!

    • Great stuff Mark – I hope you and your son get many hours of enjoyment out of the camera 🙂

  14. Hey,

I used to always want a camera when I was younger and one day I got a pretty cool one for x-mas. I recorded almost everything I was doing, but that was in the times when recording still needed a small VHS tape (the really small ones) so when the tape was done I never bothered to get a new one and that was it.
Nowadays technology is great and you can use tiny cards to record hours of footage.
I will definitely get my hands on the canon you reviewed. It seems easy to use and very neat.
    Thanks for this review,

    Esteban

    • Hi Esteban,

Man I remember those tiny VHS based tapes – my dad used to lug that type of video camera around with the family whenever we were on holiday LOL. Yeah, things have certainly moved on these days!

  15. Hi!
great review. Thanks for posting it!
Maybe I have finally found a camera for my shaky hands, lol.
I like the idea of just pulling the chip, it sure makes it simple and we like simple around here.
    Have you used this camera?
If so would you recommend it as a hobby camera?
By that I mean one that will get banged around a bit and such?
It is so hard to keep everything straight with all of the new products coming out lately.
    The price works.

    Shawn>>

    • Hi Shawn,
Yeah I actually bought this model for my partner and reviewed it at the same time! It’s a great piece of kit for the price and pretty durable but I wouldn’t go ‘banging it about the place’ if you know what I mean LOL. Electronic devices will always have their breaking point 🙂

  16. This looks like a great camcorder. Especially the sound quality options will probably come in handy. Audio quality was a bit lacking in other models. Only a shame that it doesnt have a video light build in. On the other hand are there camcorders that come with really proper and professional video lighting? I never seen one….

    • Oh yes Dirk – there are many models out there that come with built in lighting ( just look at the ones used on a majority of Found Footage films! ) 🙂

  17. Seems like you get a lot for your money in this camera. I’ve been looking for a new hand-held recently too, because my phone, while good and top of the line, isn’t cutting it. And sound quality is a HUGE deal. Bummer about the record function not being reported on the touch screen, minor detail though.
    Kevin

    • Hi Kevin, glad you approve of the product! Thanks for stopping by and leaving your opinion on it 🙂

  18. I am a huge fan of this entire site! everything i need to know to being making movies is on here. The writing process, The casting process, The equipment required, The approximate pricing. If you have a question about how to get started in the film industry the answer is on this site! keep up the great work.

    • Well thank you Anthony – great to hear these positive things spoken about my site! 🙂

  19. I enjoyed reading the review on the Canon VIXIA HF R600. I have been looking for a camera for nature photography and one that will allow for close up and light friendly videoing. I am a beginner so I have be looking for the best for beginners. Please let me know about your best choices.

    • Well you are certainly looking at one of our best choices now Kelly!!!! What price range are you in?

  20. It’s amazing what you can do these days with an affordable digital video camera. I can remember years ago when all video cameras recorded to tape and were much more expensive. Cameras like this one are great because they are much smaller than they used to be so you can easily fit them in your pocket or bag and then quickly get them out if you see something you want to film. With great video cameras like these available these days, it’s no wonder there are so many videos on YouTube.

    • Yeah the equipment has really come on leaps and bounds hasn’t it Marcus? Glad you like the camera!

  21. Hey!

Thanks for a good review. Now I can see if I want to buy this or not.
I am currently looking for something like this. Really awesome webiste you got here! I will definitely come back for ore advice and huge discounts!

  22. Hey!

Thanks for a good review. Now I can see if I want to buy this or not.

I am currently looking for something like this. Really awesome webiste you got here! I will definitely come back for ore advice and huge discounts!

I like your page about cheap horrorfilm making. Unique approach! Keep going.

  23. Awesome review!

You definitely have me convinced of the camcorder I should get. A few years back I had one, but everything has switched to phone cameras, but compared to this they are nothing.

My only question is how versatile is the camcorder?

    It’s looks pretty versatile overall

Love the review keep up the work!

    • Oh very versatile Tom, have a quick look over the dimensions – it works great in many different shooting circumstances!

  24. Hi Chris

Great review on the Canon Vixia R600 camcorder. I am not too familiar with camcorders and your review is so in depth and thorough, I now know what to look for when looking to buy one. I am looking to shhot some videos for my website projects and this one looks a good price for what I am looking to budget for. I will have a good look at this product

  25. This Canon looks like a good one for starters like myself, as someone who’s always into filming moments (with my phone most of the time), I’m looking for an affordable camera with better quality images and this one seems to fit the bill.

Do you have any demo footages shot with this camera? I’d love to see the quality so I can make the best decision.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Cheers,
    Anh

    • Not on this site, no Anh, if you give YouTube a blast you’ll find millions (literally!) 🙂

  26. I am a big canon fan, the only brand of camera I have ever owned. Such long-term lifespan and high-quality product.

I use to use a Canon SLR film camera, loved that camera but I had to sell for medical expenses.

I owned that camera for over 7 years without any problems ever, they are worth the investment.
