Conspiracy Theory (2016) – Movie Review

Conspiracy Theory (2016) - Movie Review

Okay, before we start I should point out that this film has nothing to do with the Mel Gibson film released back in the 90’s. It’s got the same title – but that’s about all it shares.

The film actually started out life with the rather interesting title of Lake On Fire, but some bright soul came up with the idea of changing it to the completely overused Conspiracy Theory

Which was a pretty stupid move in my humble opinion.

I actually only watched this film last night, so it is still very fresh in my memory. I decided to have a Found Footage ‘search mission’ and ended up with a mini-marathon in the genre.

Unfortunately this was not exactly a hidden a gem…

The Plot

While filming in southern Nevada, the television crew of a hit geek show, Alien Engineers, discover a terrifying truth lurking beneath the waters of Lake Mead.

Hint – it has something to do with aliens (duh!).

Just Get To The Juicy Bit!

Alright, we all love Found Footage films and we all know how the process unfolds with 99% of them.

We sit through about 30 to 40 minutes of character interaction designed to make us feel something for the developing personalities. The final 30 minutes is then spent watching these characters get ripped to shreds.

That’s fine – it’s part of the process and it works in most cases.

But, when you switch the numbers around a bit things start to crumble and crack – and that is what happened with this particular Found Footage offering.

At a guess I’d say this movie was made up of at least an hour of worthless fluff before a reasonably impressive 15 minute climax.

But this 15 minute section came WAY, WAY, WAY too late in the film to rescue it’s overall effect.

To be honest, I have no f##king idea what the director, Jake Myers, was thinking!

Conclusion

This was a mess – and it really, really shouldn’t have ended up that way.

The cast was pretty impressive and believable throughout the plot and the location was perfect for this sort of thing. The ‘idea’ behind the plot was also pretty solid and after the first 5 minutes of the movie I was starting to get really excited…

That excitement was short lived.

There were a handful of interesting scenes in the build (twin sisters whose alien implants interfere with each other if they get too close and an interview with a retiree from Area 51) but they were few and far between.

It seemed to me that every time the film hit an interesting ‘spike’ it seemed to knock itself back down. There were some excellent mini-twists thrown in throughout the climax but by that point I was counting down the minutes so I could move onto the next movie.

When I think about it, I suppose the film’s setup did a pretty good job of hitting the mark for the patronizing and faux dramatic tone that the majority of these TV shows exhibit these days.

The lead characters all had a sense of realism about them – they knew the subject matter they were covering in each show was probable horse shit designed to rope the viewer in.

This was a pretty cool move to give the group more ‘strength’ when it came to character development but unfortunately it was not enough to save the movie overall.

Before I finish I have to highlight what I thought was one of the most brain-fucking scenes I have ever had the displeasure of sitting through in this genre…

The scene in question involves the characters of Britney and Björn struggling to recall a rap song they came up with.

I’m not kidding you, this scene went on for several minutes and it was pure shite on every level.

I’d go as far as saying this scene was actually the scariest scene in the movie – for all the wrong reasons!

This could of been a REALLY good Found Footage offering…

But it wasn’t.

  1. Ehhh half way decent attempt. I thought it was pretty funny with the spray tan and hokeyness but that’s not really how I like my alien movies. Ha great review! Thanks!
