The Houses October Built 2 (2017) – Movie Review

The Houses October Built 2 (2017) - Movie Review

Why the fuck was this film even made?

I mean seriously – what member of the original filmmaking crew thought it would be a good idea to create a sequel that pisses all over the original plot, and quite simply ruins everything good the first outing had to offer?

Wow, how to destroy the reputation of a great Found Footage film with nothing more than pure greed.

To think I actually put The Houses October Built at number 5 on my Top Ten list – what an absolute tool I look right now!

So pissed off with this I feel like stopping the review right here and just printing one word on the page – SHAME!

Shame, shame, shame, shame, SHAME!

The Plot (If You Can Call It That!)

Recovering from the trauma of being kidnapped last Halloween by the Blue Skeleton – a group who take ‘extreme haunt’ to another level – five friends decide they must face their fears in order to move on. Heading back out on the road to visit more haunted house attractions, signs of the Blue Skeleton start appearing again and a new terror begins.

Lost For Words…Other Than ‘Greed’

Yep, that’s the only conclusion I can arrive at I’m afraid – money talks guys, money talks!

Several of you contacted me this week sending me links to this film and that was pretty awesome – since you guys have started doing this it’s cut the amount of time I spend researching these films in half (which is a BIG help).

And man was I SO excited to see this title pop up online…but it has popped up on film sites suspiciously early…and I think I know why…

Flop.

Yep, this film has probably done the rounds on the festival circuit for about 4 to 6 months, where horror fans of the original offering have had their chance to slate it…

And rightly so.

Conclusion

Very sad state of affairs really.

Okay, some great cinematography…and that’s about it!

I spent well over an hour checking my watch every five minutes to see how much longer I’d have to sit in front of this dour turd.

Absolutely NOTHING frightening about the film in any way, shape or form…which is baffling when you take into account how effective the first film was.

Some half decent minor-twists towards the end…but let’s face it…the plot was complete gob-shite to begin with so I’m grasping at straws here.

Acting was pretty good, like the first movie, but acting alone can do nothing to cover up an attempted money-cow of a movie.

I suppose I shouldn’t really be that surprised – how many times has a classic horror film been ruined by a dumb-ass sequel?

Too many time to mention really.

The thing that get’s me about this film is the complete lack of love put into it. I mean, surely Zack Andrews and Bobby Roe knew they were heading towards the dark side with this cardboard cutout of a film?

I kept on waiting, and waiting, and waiting, for ANYTHING to happen.

It never came.

God forbid they decide to make a trilogy out of this.

The Houses October Built is now a ‘dirty word’ in the Found Footage genre, and I for one, won’t be mentioning the franchise again.

Complete shit.

  1. As an avid fan of the FF genre, I have found myself checking this site pretty much daily since I stumbled across it over a year ago and must say your critiques couldn’t be any closer to my own and was anticipating the review for this one. It did not disappoint. I viewed this movie over the weekend with the gf and we couldn’t agree with your review more. We found ourselves barely paying attention as our initial excitement quickly faded into boredom. Such an unfortunate waste of a sequel.

    Cheers, Chris!

    • Well that’s nice to hear – cheers for using the site Jonny!
As for this film – the less said about the shit-heap, the better!

  2. Thank you for sitting through this so I didn’t have to. I was a huge fan of the original. So, once rumors of the sequel started coming out, I expected the worse but accepted I would still likely have to watch it. So, your sacrifice was not in vain.

  3. Flippin’ crap tacos! That was the worst sequel ever and like you said, they completely shit all over the first movie! Most horror movie franchises don’t work but this was even worse than most. Wow! What a waste of seven dollars. Run from this poor excuse for a round footage click and even worst excuse for a movie sequel. Not even a little bit scary. My reflection in the mirror in the morning is ten thousand times scarier than this garbage.

  4. Hey man its been a while,, hope everything is fine!
watched it just because of your awesome review. 😀
“complete shit” was the keyword for me to give it a go.

totally agree with you but i got to say that i really enjoyed the different haunted houses the attractions were quite nice but i´m sure that they producer got nothing to do with that at all!
The plot twist was ridiculous. it felt like the time for a decent ending ran out and they were forced to find a quick solution for everything.
I mean really, what was that?
So whats left? Nice landscapes, some kind of belivable acting, (too much) semi professional drone skills, a halfway enjoyable soundtrack (wich has actually nothing to do with a ff movie in my opinion but i was nice listen to it anyway at 4:20) and of course….
    The laser tits 😀

    Greetings

    • Nice to hear from you again Noel!

Yeah the film was a complete waste of space for me – I really can’t find a good reason for it being made…other than lining the pockets of the filmmakers of course!
One of the biggest disappointments I’ve come across in the FF genre.

  5. This movie was barely tolerable. I’d put it just a notch or two above an Ulli Lommel flick because of the acting, but that’s it. Been a fan of your site for a couple of years. Keep up the good work!

  6. I wasn’t really a fan of the first one, but this one… oof. It’s rare to see a sequel that completely trashes anything you might have enjoyed about the movie it spun off from so effectively.

    • Yep – definitely a contender for worst sequel EVER to any sort of genre! Money talks…
