Panasonic Lumix GH4 Review – The Best 4K Camera?

Panasonic Lumix GH4 Review

Product: Panasonic Lumix GH4 4K

Subject: Panasonic Lumix GH4 Review

Price: $1,697.99 ( retail )

Our Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Ever since hearing about all round cameras being used as ‘on set’ back-ups ( the last season of Dexter ) we’ve taken steps to try out as many as possible for the purpose of this site.

We’re lucky enough to be in constant contact with local indie filmmakers and camera suppliers. These contacts frequently give us the opportunity to try out equipment for the purpose of review without putting our hands in our pockets.

This was thankfully the case when it came to the best 4K camera we have reviewed for this site – the Panasonic Lumix GH4 4K.

We received the Lumix GH4 a few weeks ago and decided to write a review about our experiences with it so far. In this Panasonic Lumix GH4 review, I will discuss how well it works, how durable it is, some minor drawbacks with it, and where to get the best deal when you buy it online.

By the end of this review, you should have a good idea as to whether the Panasonic Lumix GH4 camera is the right fit for you.

Panasonic Lumix GH4 Camera – Product Overview

This device is actually the first mirrorless camera on the market to record 4K footage straight out of the box making it perfect for beginners to the subject.

It’s about the same size as a regular DSLR camera but it’s magnesium alloy body makes it a much more durable choice.

As well as it’s brutish alloy body it offers extra protection to it’s dials and buttons – each is reinforced with protective seals that combat water and dust. ( WARNING – this does not mean you can drop the device in a local pond! It’s designed to survive heavy rain/bad weather ).

OLED screen and an OLED electronic viewfinder

The GH4 makes use of an excellent OLED screen and an OLED electronic viewfinder. I noticed a very slight lag when using the viewfinder but overall it was big, bright and VERY clean.

The best 4K camera options on the market offer Wi-Fi and NFC functions and the GH4 follows suit. We were really impressed by the ease of tapping our NFC-enabled phone against the GH4 to establish a Wi-Fi connection.

From this connection we were able to control the camera parameters through Panasonic’s Image App.

Below is a list of the important Panasonic Lumix GH4 tech specs:

Camera Specs

The Good & The Bad

The Pros:

  • The magnesium alloy body will withstand almost anything that comes it’s way
  • Heavy size and weight does not stop the device from feeling ‘correct’ and safe within your hand due to the effective molded grip
  • Buttons and dials are easily accessible
  • Also includes an extra 3in pull-out-and-tilt screen ( touch sensitive )
  • The 4K video recording is handled by an awesome image processor called the Venus Engine which targets noise reduction and picture quality
  • Offers superb quality with 4K1080p and 720p video
  • Records in MP4, AVCHD or MOV

The Cons:

  • QR code and manual connections seemed a lot easier to set up than the NFC connection
  • The Auto-focus is not as fast as the SONY A7R

Who is The Panasonic Lumix GH4 4K For?

The high ISO performance, superb 4K video capture, accurate auto-focus and duel viewfinder and screen make this a brilliant choice of CSC for amateur movie makers and photographers.

Our Final Opinion on The Panasonic Lumix GH4 Camera

Panasonic have created a professional-quality camera that aims to reach the same heights as the top-end DSLRs from Nikon and Canon.

The GH4 is superbly put together device that is both durable and easy enough to use.

The still image quality and the video quality are awesome considering the camera is a mirrorless model.

It’s not the most compact of cameras and the price may well put your hair on end but you get what you pay for in this business.

It’s a versatile and hardy model that offers top quality stills and video in any weather situation.

  1. i ran across this camera a while back when searching for a professional like camera. This camera seems to be a more affordable option instead of your usual canon and nikon. It seems to be very easy to use and not super complicated which is always a plus for us that are somewhat technology illiterate like me lol

    • Hi Yunier,
Yeah, I also found it a lot more ‘user friendly’ than the other brands out there – it seemed a lot smoother to get from A to B ( if you catch my drift! ). Thanks for chipping in with your own review/opinion – stop by again if there’s anything you’d like to add to this 🙂

  2. Very nice. Actually, this is the camera that I have my eye on when I can finally afford it. I’m looking to improve my lense set too.

I have a little eos1100D right now but it’s sorely needing an upgrade. It’s great for taking macros and landscape photos but the moving pictures and the nightlife captures need to be worked upon.

I’ll bookmark this page for later I think

    • Hi Raymond, glad you found the review handy!
I know the eos1100D quite well – it’s an all round decent camera! Nice to have you here – hope this new camera works out for you ( I’m pretty sure it will! )

  3. Wow, this camera seems like a great choice. You didn’t have too many cons about this particular camera. It does seem a little on the pricey end, but like you said it can be a great investment for beginners. This camera may also be a good choice my family videos.I can use this camera to make fun family videos just for my family to enjoy. Thanks for the info.

    • Hi Evelyn,
Well there’s not many cons listed because the camera is actually really good LOL. It’s quite a professional model mind so you might want to scale down a bit if you’re looking to do some family videos 🙂

  4. It’s been a while since I owned a proper camera, so it was great to come across your review of the Panasonic Lumix GH4 camera which I’ve just added to my list for this upcoming Christmas. If I don’t get it, i’ll buy it myself lol.

This Panasonic camera has many fantastic features and pros, and is something I can’t wait to test out.

    Cheers for the review. Neil

  5. Hi Chris,

I have a Nikon camera , but I think it’s time to make some changes. The Panasonic seems to be easier to manipulate and I like the look of it!

How is the batteries? I am asking this because mine is really slow and it always take the whole day to full it out.

Thank you very much for this awesome review

    • Hi Daniella,
The battery performance on this particular camera seems to be pretty good ( in my experience! ). I haven’t yet run into any problems and the power’s never died on me – it charges pretty rapidly as well. Like I said, I’ve had no battery problems so far 🙂

  6. great review here. I like how you took your time to explain the pros and cons associated with it. It seems like a very great product

But i wanted to find out if there was free shipping for people living outside of the US and UK as well?

And again, is the shipping done to all countries?

    • Yeah Fidel, I did point out to you on your last visit – most Amazon links will take you straight through to your demographic store 🙂

  7. What a beautiful camera!

I am definitely an amateur when it comes to photography and video, but after your review, I’m convinced I could almost pass as a pro with the Panasonic Lumix GH4.

I like the durability of the magnesium alloy body. I can be kind of rough on my gear.

What do you mean “mirrorless camera” and why does that make it perfect for a beginner?

    • Hey Mr. Horton!
It basically means an camera that accepts different lenses, also known as a MILC 🙂

  8. Hi. Thanks for the review. Definitely a good investment for somebody wanting to become a professional film maker. Getting the details here makes the decision to buy easier. It’s magnesium alloy body makes it a much more durable choice…handy when you have curious children around. And the fact that it can survive heavy rain and bad weather is a major plus.

    • Hello again Selvie!
Wow you’ve done a thorough job in going through all the cameras we review here – hope you’ve managed to find one that fit’s your needs 🙂

  9. Hi!
I like the looks of this camera.
We are looking for a camera we can put on a tripod and record some videos for our product and this sounds like it would do the job.
Are you happy with the video quality and will it look professional?
The price tag does make you stand up and pay attention for sure but if it is worth the money then it is a good buy, like you said, you get what you pay for.
    Thanks for the review!

    • Hi Shawn,
The video function on the camera is excellent – filmmaking quality in many respects and it’s never let me down 🙂

  10. Dear Chris,

This seems like an awesome camera to use. It appears to be user friendly and delivers its purpose well for capturing priceless moments of anything in life. It looks professional enough to make me not want to look at another camera that even comes close to the great appearance of this you have mentioned in a review here. The price is good as opposed to others that are more expensive and might slightly are off in comparison to the Panasonic Lumix GH4 camera.

Thanks for such a great detailed report on this great camera product. 🙂

    • Well it sorta sounds like you’re already sold Angel – good luck with the camera 🙂

  11. Hello Chris,
What a great article!! You supplied a heck of a lot of information and it was easily understandable by even someone like me who isn’t camera savvy. This sounds like a really good option for someone looking to move up from the less capable cameras most people carry around these days. Would you be able to recommend a good all-around lens to go with the camera body? Thanks and best of luck in all your endeavors.

    • Oh that’s a hard one Rick – I’ve used a few over the last few months! One that sticks in mind is the Panasonic Lumix G Vario lens, it’s about $250 but it rocks 🙂

  12. Hi Chris this product was something I wanted to buy some time ago. I saved up but had to pay bills and forgot about the camera. It features are very top quality but the price is out of my range for the time being and I’ll have to wait and save before I can have this gem.

  13. Damn, that’s an expensive camera! But I;m sure they are pretty important for good filmmaking, I know i have a friend that has a Canon kind of similar, but honestly I just use my phone whenever I need to record something, Iphone seems to work just fine! lol But we’ve discussed that before! I’m going to share this with my film friend see what he thinks about the investment for our entertainment company.

  14. Hi Chris!

Your reviews are always very interesting, you give us customers a nice place to start our decision process and you give us tools to make better choices, for that I thank you!

Boy, this camera seems a dream come true!!

The sad part, is that in this point, I cannot afford it, that the reality, that is why i would like to ask you a question.

I would like to film some short scenes (10 seconds top) in slow motion.
Can you give me some recommendation for that? I would like to know If an affordable camera, near 300$ I would say, could do the magic. 🙂

Thanks in advance and best regards!

    • Well to be honest with you Fito a camera that price will probably not be much better than a decent iPhone video setup. It would make much more sense to save for a couple more months and get something worthwhile – you will not regret it 🙂

  15. Great review on the Panasonic Lumix GH4. Lots of in depth detailed information on the product. Anybody considering buying this camera will find everything they need to know here on this post. I also like how you are not afraid to mention the cons and what people should look for before buying the camera. Great review.

  16. Hey, Chris.

Looked over your very interesting website, overall.

I enjoyed your writings and the way you write.

I feel you’re right there in front of me and talking to me!!

In your “About Me” page, I learned you don’t care for the Twilight show?!?!???? WTH?!?!?!?….LOL!!!

I remember growing up being glued to the TV watching this show, LOL!!

    OK, showing my age.

Anyways, sorry I got off track.

The Panasonic Camera seems to be a very effective tool for making horror movies or any movie one wants to make.

Does this camera have a variety of “mounting brackets”?

Like for a teaching video or a how to do lessons.

If so, look forward to your writings on this.

Hope this helps and had fun reading your About Me page.

    • Hi Larry – it seems as though we’ve got out wires crossed a little bit 🙂

I’m on about the Twilight film series – that awful girly vampire crap! I think you may be on about the Twilight Zone ( which is a pretty awesome series! ). I’m not sure about what brackets you are on about but most of these cameras ( if not all! ) are set up to be used in a professional situation 🙂

      Hope this helps!!!!

  17. Hi Chris, Found your site very entertaining. I had never heard of “New Found Footage Movies” before. Seems to be a huge following of the genre and it looks like you may ruffle a few feathers with you reviews now and then.
I was always interested in the Loch Ness monster as well. Guess Nessi is still a bit camera shy? Why don’t you tell us how you really feel about the “Twilight franchise” 🙂 Sucks what? All kidding aside, your site is more than just entertaining. It is fun, informative (especially to a New Found Footage Movies newb like me). I will be checking it out more now that I have seen it. Another site that I can’t critique with any advice what so ever. Well done! Have bookmarked it!

    • Hi Chris!

Great to have you here mate – glad you enjoyed your visit so much ( and thanks for bookmarking us! ) 🙂

  18. Hello, Chris,
Your site is right down my line of movie interest. Your first image with the girl being pulled in Paranormal Activity reminded me of how much I enjoyed that movie.
I also purchased the DVDs. I believe I have most of them. The Blair Witch Project was another good horror movie to watch.
How to Make a Budget Horror Movie. I don’t think I would make a good film Producer, but I am having fun watching them. How ofter do you add more movies to this list? I enjoyed my visit to your site, Chris. You have a great site for people that love horror movies. Take care, Chris.

    • Glad you enjoyed your visit Prince ( the girl on the home page is actually from the original REC film though! ) 🙂

  19. I have been looking for a new camera to replace our old one. There are so many cameras and accompanying reviews out there. I have seen a few about the panasonic lumix camera and all of the reviews seem quite good. Unfortunately it is a bit out of my price range, however it seems like it is more than just a camera.

Our current camera does not take good videos so we want something for videos (mostly home videos of the kids).

We also want something that we can have for several years. We are sick of replacing cameras every other year. So maybe the investment will be worth it!

I will talk this over with my husband.

  20. Hey Chris,
How helpful would you say is Panasonic’s Image App? Is it a major selling point or just a cool plus it has? How many attempts did you have to go through for it to connect? For all its Pros, I just might be able to justify paying that price tag.

    • Hi Stephanie,
The app is actually pretty cool but there were connectivity problems at first ( but it works like a dream now! ). Unfortunately this does happen with a small amount of users – no idea why!

  21. This is an informative review of the Panasonic Lumix GH4. I didn’t know that TV shows were using these types of cameras for a backup while shooting. That makes them seem more than capable for family videos around the house. I’m going to use you review to help decide on my next camera purchase – thanks for your review.

    • No problem Jeff – I’m glad our review was helpful to you! Good luck with whatever camera you eventually choose! 🙂

  22. I have been looking for a professional camera for a while now. I will definitely consider buying this one. Although the price is a bit of an heavy weight for me. I’m not sure if I can afford it right now. Also, I’m not from the US or the UK. Are there any other promotions I can benefit from (I’m from Belgium)?

    • Hi Vincent,

The Amazon links will take you straight through to your local online store – I’m sure they will have their own sort of discount/deal going! 🙂

  23. Hey there Chris!
You have a really well structured review…I can see what an interest you have in selling cameras and you have done a great job on explaining to me The pros as well as the cons of this camera! So great job! I consider this as a well trusted article and post! Keep up the good work!

    • Wow Shane! Who are you? The website police LOL 🙂

Well thanks for the positive feedback anyway – the money is in the post!

  24. Sounds like a great camera. I’ve been researching cameras and finally ran into this one. I do videos for local businesses and been looking to upgrade. This one sounds like a good option. The price is not too bad either. You get a lot of camera for a good price.

  25. Perfect! I was just googling what camera would be best for me to buy today!

I love the information you give and the ratings help me make a decision so easy. I really want a 4K camera and thanks to you I now have this on my list of possiblities, that I never knew about 🙂

  26. Hey There

Great article by the way, I love how your personality shines through your content, not easy to do but you nailed it, good job

this is a freaking sweet piec of equipment the quality of this camra is outsatnding I was on a website just a few minutes ago and they where comparing it to some of the best camras in the world.

One of my friends was trying to find info on this yesterday, I will share this article with her she will be happy.

    Thank you

    • Cheers Jack – great to hear you like the camera AND the writing style ( and thanks for sharing with your friend! )

  27. Hey there,

Loads of quality information here on the Gh4. I am looking to get into a 4k camera for video in the near future and my question is would this type of camera be best for that or would a different more video based camera be better. It would be for shooting short videos and/or commercials.

    Thank you,

    • Hi Anthony,

This camera is basically a good all-rounder – it fits well into any sort of photo or video environment. I know of people who have shot complete films with it and I also know of people who use it as a ‘side camera’ for filming.

  28. Hi Chris,
Nice review on this Panasonic Lumix. I wish I could just get this camera just to have it for like everything. I have bought so many cameras that are like OK but I just want to spend like 4k on a camera one day and be able to be like.. ya i have a better camera than all ya’ll!

  29. Great review Chris! really thorough and informative. My last camera was a Canon and despite all the hype around Canon even though it is a quality brand, I was a little disappointed.. Im going to buy a new camera soon and this Panasonic model looks pretty good. I might just come back when im ready. Thanks for the review!

  30. I believe I commented just before on your Zoom voice recorder review, and I said I couldn’t find anymore product reviews. My apologies because I found them!

That might be my problem (probably is) but I did check for them before and navigation was harder then it should’ve been to get to this great content!

Anyway, I’m loving these reviews man, Panasonic are a bit hard done by I reckon. I think they can get overlooked by the more popular Canon and Nikon, but the inclusion of 4K was a real winner for me considering the price.
    Keep up the great work!

    • The navigation bar is on the right side of the site in plain view. Aptly named PRODUCT REVIEWS! 🙂

  31. Arrgghh, I really wish I had a camera like this! I bought my trusty Nikon D50 back in 2006, and it’s still going strong, but it’s missing a lot of the features that many cameras have these days. For example, the D50 doesn’t even film videos, which is a great shame. It seems like there are more and more cameras like this now that can film pretty good videos, and at a lower price than getting a full video camera.

One thing that confuses me, though: what do you mean by mirrorless?

    • It’s all to do with the interchangeable-lens feature Marcus – mirrorless cameras tend to be a little lighter or more mobile when compared to say a DSLR.

  32. I must say the Panasonic Lumix sounds awesome. I’m looking to get a nice camera to make videos with. This sounds perfect! Okay, so it is a little bit on the expensive side but I think it will be well worth saving up for extra good quality!

If I do end up getting this camera, would you say the sound quality is good enough on its own or will I need a microphone? I’m intending on making YouTube videos and want to ensure they are of absolute top quality from the start (I’m a perfectionist like that!)

    • Stand alone mics are always a nice extra Hannah but the camera itself has a pretty decent mic, especially if you’re just targeting YouTube! 🙂

  33. Your article on this Panasonic camera is very impressing, it does sound to be a high quality camera product with impressing photography features.

What is your opinion on the cost of this camera, would a Nikon or Canon product of the same quality be in the same price range of this Panasonic?

    • To be honest with you mate, most quality levels from top makers tend to fall around the same zone in my experience. You can get a decent deal or two here and there but they usually end up in the same price band. Different suppliers will offer you different deals from time to time!

  34. Hi, I loved this post. I was looking for a really good camera and to be honest with you. I never even knew there was a 4k camera. I liked the honest review. I am really tempted at buying this, good to hear it’s durable as well.
Thanks for the info, page is bookmarked.
