We have been lucky enough to get our hands on this product for trial purposes over the last two months and this is a review about our experiences with it so far.
In this Sony HDR AS100VR review, we will discuss how well it works, how durable it is, some minor drawbacks with it, and where to get the best deal when you buy it online.
By the end of this review, you should have a good idea as to whether this digital Sony camcorder is right for you.
Sony HDR AS100VR – Product Overview
The Sony HDR AS100VR is one of the top rated Sony camcorders currently on the market. You can do away with the tricky smartphone apps as this camera pairs a rubberized remote control with the camera body for quick and easy control. This remote is effective even when it is 30 feet away from the camera body.
The camera itself boasts a sporty bullet-design with easy access parameter buttons for use instead of the remote. The body also offers a slick tripod thread for basic camera mounting and sublime stability.
This digital Sony camcorder offers a image stabilization parameter called SteadyShot. This allows the device to deliver stunningly smooth video even while in motion.
It records with 50Mbps high bit rate data transfer for a smooth image motion – it also supports 24p high-speed 120 fps and 240 fps shooting with sound. Sony have even included the option to record in MP4 HD video for those that want to post their work straight onto the web.
The package also provides the option to control up to 5 Sony HDR AS100VR cameras at the same time through the LiveView Remote. ALL audio is captured in Stereo Sound.
The Good & The Bad

Who is The Sony HDR AS100VR For?
This camera is perfect for any filmmaker that has usability as a top priority due to the super-handy wristband feature. We feel the camera is best suited to those who are looking to:
- Film snow sports ( extreme or otherwise )
- Looking for a POV cinematography & filmmaking solution
- Cyclists who want to record their journey
- Film underwater scenes ( up to 30 minutes in water as deep as 9.8′ )
- Film POV water sports like surfing or kayaking
Our Final Opinion on The Sony HDR AS100VR
This is certainly one of the best Sony camcorders for action shots we have come across. The pro-quality features like Advanced Steady Shot, built-in Wi-Fi, GPS tagging and included LiveView Remote make it stand head and shoulders above it’s competitors.
Most of the video we captured had excellent low-light sensitivity and clarity due to the rather impressive Exmor R CMOS sensor. There was nothing ‘grainy’ about the final picture quality of our work!
Running out of memory is not a problem due to the inclusion of a Memory Stick Micro and Micro SD/SDHC card slot. The camera also offers a handy HDMI output so you can easily showcase your creations on TV with friends and family.
This is a great action cam and is better than its predecessor and any of the GoPro products in many ways. The stabilization, choice of field of view, mounting options and the size/weight of the device make it one of the best choices of action cam on the market.
